For a 4th year, the annual Bolton Referees Golf Day was held in glorious weather , Paul obviously has hidden powers (long may it continue). This year we had a change of venue, the day out was turned into a day's golf with a night's stay at Hill Valley just north of Whitchurch in Shropshire. Also this year we have finally acquired a trophy to be retained for 1 year only and then passed on to the next winner. The trophy has been called the 'Quaich Cup', The Quaich is a traditional Scottish drinking cup symbolising welcome and friendship.
The course was in excellent condition although quite a hike for those without buggies, which was everyone apart from Dave Johnson and Darren Handley, who were both suffering injuries. The usual pleading for a more realistic handicap was followed by the draw for teams, those with a handicap of 22 and under being 'seeded'.
Most people seemed to have improved their scores from last year, especially Ade who managed a magnificent 23 points compared with 5 last year - obviously been having lessons !
The individual trophy was won by Dave Johnson with 33 points, who pipped Dave Unsworth into second place by 1 point (the three at the 18th by Dave J won it for him ). I seem to remember Unsie being pipped last year by Dave Johnson Jnr .
The team prize went to the 'cripples' who had the buggy , i.e. Dave Johnson and Darren Handley, the old saying 'Beware the injured golfer' was never more true.
Longest drive was won by Paddy McStay, nearest the pin was won by Alan Grundy and the 'Hacker' prize was won by Ryan Johnson.
After a fantastic meal everyone headed into Whitchurch to enjoy the local atmosphere, returning to the hotel in the wee small hours to indulge in a little card school. Heads were sore in the morning as we all congregated for a superb breakfast before heading back home.
Finally, the usual note of immense thanks to Paul Brabin for organizing another great day. Here's to next year.
